Laotian Food - STUNNING LAO FISH SALAD | Village Cooking in Laos!

►Get a free 30 day trial for Audible at http://audible.com/markwiens or text ‘markwiens’ to 500-500 ►Subscribe for 2 new videos per week: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe Thank you to Audible for sponsoring this video. Latest audiobook I listed to was called “The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu.” During my trip to Vientiane, we decided to take a day trip to a small village called Ban Hatkai located right on the outskirts of Phou Khao Khouay National Bio-Diversity Conservation Area in Laos. The main goal of the trip was to visit the village and especially learn about local Lao Lum food (ລາວລຸ່ມ) It was about a 2 hour drive to get there, and we stopped a few minutes outside of Vientiane first to visit a market and buy some ingredients. But the best thing about markets is that there’s always also some pre-cooked food available - and for breakfast in Laos, that means sticky rice and grilled meat! We got some quail and grilled dried buffalo lungs, both of which were delicious. Ban Hatkhai - Ban Hatkai is a beautiful quiet village, and we arrived to the home, a beautiful wooden Laos traditional home. She immediately got started cooking, chopping all the vegetables and herbs, and steaming the sticky rice. Koi paa - Lao fish mixed dish - For me this was the highlight of our meal. The fish was sliced thin, flash blanched, mixed with all sorts of fresh herbs, and toasted sticky rice powder, and seasoned with fish sauce. Jaew - Any type of Lao dip - She made both an eggplant and a tomato jaew, both of which were delicious to eat with vegetables. The best part of this meal and Lao food experience was all of us sitting down to eat together, sitting around a colorful spread of Lao food. The food was heavy on the vegetables and herbs, nutritious, and delicious. Street Food in Bangkok - Awesome PAD THAI and Instant Noodles on Petchaburi Soi 5!

Petchaburi Soi 5 is one of the best Bangkok street food streets! ►Watch the full videos in this playlist: https://goo.gl/yczAoQ ►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe Petchaburi Soi 5 (เพชรบุรี ซอย 5) has long been one of my go-to street food streets in Bangkok. Starting in the evening at around 4 pm, the entire road starts to fill with street food carts selling all sorts of Thai dishes. You’ll find everything from rice and curry to soup noodles, snacks, and fresh fruits and vegetables. It had been a few years since I had explore Petchaburi Soi 5 (เพชรบุรี ซอย 5), so in this Thai street food tour I’m taking you with me to some of my old favorites, and some new spots. Enjoy! Yam mama (ยำมาม่า) - 50 THB ($1.52) - This is the first dish I tried. MAMA are Thai instant noodles and this is a completely different way to eat them - in mixed salad form. Khanom krok (ขนมครก) - 30 THB ($0.92) - Coconut griddle cakes are one of my favorites, they are crunchy on the outside and gooey in the center. Don’t miss this Thai street food snack. Cha yen (ชาเย็น) - 25 THB ($0.76) per cup - Thai tea Pad thai (ผัดไทย), Hoy tod (หอยทอด) - This was formerly a street food cart that now has their own permanent shophouse location. They make pretty decent Pad Thai and they hoy tod, which in this case in a mussels omelet, is pretty good as well. Total price - 125 THB ($3.81) Nam prik pla too (น้ำพริกปลาทู) - For something a little healthier, I’m a huge fan of nam pirk pla too, a pounded chili mackerel sauce that’s eaten with vegetables. Total price - 70 THB ($2.14) for everything Chao guay (เฉาก๋วย) - 25 THB ($0.76) - For dessert, I had grass jelly with ice. The owner was so friendly and happy. Haircut - 100 THB ($3.05) Pad kra prao moo krob kai dao (ผัดกระเพราหมูกรอบไข่ดาว) - Final meal of this Bangkok street food tour, I headed across the street to Petchaburi Soi 10 to seek out one of my old time favorites. The stall was still there, and they make a pretty good plate of Thai crispy pork belly fried with basil. Price - 40 THB ($1.22) Thank you for joining me on this Thai street food tour of Petchaburi Soi 5 (เพชรบุรี ซอย 5). It’s the type of street you can walk through and just choose whatever you like to eat. Village Food in West Africa - BEST FUFU and EXTREME Hospitality in Rural Ghana!

This was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had! ►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week: http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe ►T-shirts and caps available now: https://migrationology.com/store/ Many thanks to Afia Tours (https://www.afiatours-ghana.com/) for taking on this amazing village food day trip in Ghana (Note: I paid for this tour, it is not sponsored, but I fully recommend it - it was awesome)! It was about a three hour drive from Accra to get to the village. The village was somewhere in the central Cape Coast region of Ghana (however no near to the coast, but much inland). The people from the village were so incredibly friendly, and it was one of the most genuinely hospitable and friendly villages I’ve ever visited. It was an honor and privilege to spend time at the village. As we arrived, they had already started cooking some Ghanaian food specialties. One the menu, we had banku with okra soup, fufu (a staple of West African food) with palm nut soup, and finally fried plantains with beans. All the food was incredibly good, and it was one of the best bowls of fufu I ate during my entire time in Ghana. Thanks again to Afia Tours (https://www.afiatours-ghana.com/) for setting this up!
